one.

i liked him
because he knocked the ash
off his cigarette
with his left index finger;
once,
he was drunk
and burned himself
when he forgot to pull away.

two.

that day,
i ate two apples
a banana
and three rice cakes. he asked

do you always do this to yourself?

three.

the first couch was red:
soft synthetic fiber that inhaled
sweat,

quivered beneath our touch,
knowing.

four.

i like dogs,
he told me,
but i wish i owned horses;

he had a pony, once,
a shetland that hated brushing,
and we laughed.

five.

i was the first to say
i loved him,

but not before he
touched my collar where it
dipped,

smiling because
i let him pay for dinner
and my train tickets.

six.

he asked,

do you always do this to yourself?
when i told him
i didn't trust my
sex;

i listened.

seven.

i came home at six,
tired,
and he had quit
those cigarettes and asked
i do the same;

on the couch,
now brown and plush,
he left a pack
of Newports and said

found them at work.

eight.

at a movie,
sensational and scalding,
i touched his finger
where the burn had flaked
away with dead skin,

but we laughed
and laughed.

Love this because it's often the "insignificant" moments we brush aside on a daily basis that turn out to be what we remember and miss most when someone/thing is gone. <3

I might need to try one of these on a glory be day that I don't have any ideas. It's a really cool concept.

I just might ;) LOL

it's similar to the "8 things I could never say" prompt I did years back that you might like, do you want me to find it? I can see you doing one.

sure!

(this was originally ten but the other two were disproportionately silly and i decided to use them for something else--when i saw the picture, that pony he had was seriously the angriest looking thing i've seen in my life.)

I wish I had the original, I think it turned out better than mine, but I didn't keep it and it is lost to the times... [link]

(8 for some reason is a nice number. Unexpected, but still "full" feeling.)

:+fav:ed for safekeeping.

(it is-- three, five, seven, eight, ten, fifteen, and twenty are all magic numbers, as far as storytelling goes)

(see, I feel like three, five, seven, and ten are all overplayed - I am guilty of it myself - but eight is virtually untapped - or slides around much less noticeably)

It's a good idea, isn't it? Man, I wish I knew how to credit the original idea-person. Although honestly, I think the one I saw was a reaction to the original, I'm not sure I ever saw the original.

(i rather like five and seven--ten is the one that's sort of lost its power for me)

oh man, i've been there. this poem ( [link] ) was based on a poem that was based on a prompt "write about the first church you went to but it can't be a narrative"

and i can't find the poem and i never knew where the prompt was.
